  1. The churches can help by creating a sanctuary from the troubles of the world. The pulpit should never be about things of the world in the form of politics or nightly news types of distressing events.
The churches can give a wonderful alternative to the pricey pursuits of modern life--so called afluenza--like shopping and jetsetting for fun. People should feel the desire for what you provide: gathering and working and worshipping at the parish instead. Also, the church community is a little workable socialist family anyway if done right: there is food and interfaith hospitality housing and sharing of all sorts.
I work a lot with the poor, and it is important for folks to realize things like cell phones and cable are luxuries and you don't need them. Most people think they are paying 6cents a min for cell phones, but actually are paying $6 a minute due to time banking in too large a plan. You can't really bank time... this is giving the cos. money.
